How were you introduced to the Firefly Universe? Did you catch it when it originally aired? Was it introduced by a friend or family member? Did you catch on when you went to go see the BDM? Tell us your Firefly/Serenity origins here!!!
I have an interesting story when it comes to Firefly. See, I was always aware of it, but since it originally aired before Sci-Fi had a real hook on me, I didn't watch it. It was only later that I started hearing and seeing more of it, especially in BSG forums. When I originally saw the trailer for Serenity I thought, "This is my kind of movie." and I went to look it up. After I realized that it was a continuation of the Firefly universe, I knew I had to watch all the eppies. Now the Sci-Fi channel showed them, but I did miss I few episodes and the weekend that Serenity premeired, not all episodes had even been shown anyways(they were shown in the "Joss order", btw), but I had a good hold on the characters, and when I saw Serenity, it BLEW ME AWAY! Literally, I actually screamed and I have NEVER done that while watching a movie, never. So, after watching Serenity, I knew I needed to watch Firefly, so I asked for it for Christmas, got it, and have watched it none stop for 24 hours. I am now addicted to everything Firefly and so are my friends. _________________ |

As one of the unfortunate people who didn't have the capabilities to watch it when it was first aired, I actually saw the film first. Then about a month ago I saw the DVD's really cheap in my local shop so I bought them and watched them all in one go... and that was it... I got addicted.
It was always bound to happen though, I've been a fan of Joss's work since early Buffy so I was bound to see it eventually. |

I watched it when it first aired even though I thought it was going to royally SUCK (wasn't a scifi fan at the time and I still hate westerns). Good thing it had Joss' name attached or I STILL might not be here. I gave it a shot and fell in love.

I never heard about it when it was first on. Somehow it went under my radar (not all that surprising, considering the lack of advertising). Then about two and a half years ago, while Barnes and Noble was having 3 for 2 dvd sale, I decided to buy The West Wing seasons 1 and 2.
When I went to look for a third dvd set to purchase, my boyfriend handed me Firefly and said "You neeeeed to get this one". I bought it (for free, really!), and the rest was history. Well, really, the rest wasn't history. The rest was me refusing to watch it for months while I was in the middle of my West Wing obsession, said boyfriend kidnapping the boxed set and taking it to Toledo, and me finally breaking down and watching it when he sat me down in front of the tv and sat grinning at me while I watched the pilot. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon_razz.gif) . So I was force fed Firefly, and I've never been so happy to have something forced upon me in my life. |

Some friends forced me to watch a couple of episodes via DVD. Needless to say I took their DVD's (much to their displeasure) and watched it all in a couple of sittings. And I don't even really watch TV. I was hooked.

I got to thanks my dad, he was the first one to show me Firefly.
I'd heard about it, just the name dropped that Joss had a show out there, some reason I got it mixed up with another show I watched and never checked it any further. I don't got cabel at my new apt, and my dad has been tapping me shows, when I drop in we exchange em out for a new batch. He told me he got a new show he liked called Firefly. I was like great, that show? So I got home, watched my epies of Enterprise and BSG, and decided what the heck, may as well watch it. Boy was I wrong about the show. This wasn't what I'd watched late one night, this show from the get go rocked. =) After that I asked him to make sure to try to get all of them he could, and quickly realized there wasn't much before reruns. So I hit the net, hungry for more. There I met the Browncoats, and learned about Serenity, and a bit late, I joined up with a great community of people, to help fight for an amazing verse that came from the heart and mind of Joss Whedon, my master. =) Been with Buffy since day one, only wish I'd paid more attention and been with Firefly too. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon_biggrin.gif) To compelte the circle, never could get my folks to go watch the movie, so took my copy down with me to watch together. I am one of the lucky, or maybe not so lucky, ones who got hooked way back when it originally aired on Fox. You see, I am a Buffyverse fan as well (BIG into the Jossverse, you have no idea, I pride myself on being a Buffy fan since the MOVIE), so I'd heard that a new Whedon show was airing and I jumped. Had to watch it, so I caught the trainjob, and I was hooked, that was it. So for a while I watched Firefly and John Doe every Friday (Ya'll remember that show? John Doe, it was interesting), until, of course, Fox cancelled Firefly. I was mad, I wrote letters, I wrote emails, sent postcards, the whole nine, and then I gave up, happy that they at least released it on DVD. Then my aunt, who is also a fan of the show, though not quite as rabid as I am, told me Universal bought the rights to Firefly, there's going to be a movie. I was estastic and I flipped. I posted fliers, Loaned my DVDs to friends, wore the Serenity buttion I got at the Canadan National Expo to work(Against company dress code), and later, wore my teeshirt EVERYWHERE. I got together a group of my friends to go to the movie the day it came out, I pushed, oh believe me I pushed. Hell, I even bought the DVD as a Christmas gift for a bunch of friends.
So yeah, I've been a Browncoat since day one, even if I'm mostly a community lurker. |

I have to admit, I only finally saw Firefly earlier this month. It originally aired at a time when I was watching little to no TV at the time. I heard about it through a friend or two at the time, but that was it. Later I heard about it from other friends, and then others, and I knew it'd probably be something I'd enjoy, but somehow never got around to actually watching it until a few weeks ago when I reinstated my Netflix membership. Firefly was the first thing I put in my queue. Right now I have disc 4 from them and Serenity, need to watch those or send them back - I ordered both from Amazon the other day, they should arrive very soon. people on my LJ friends list apparently looked forward to that sci fi movie called Serenity. I had no idea what it was, but I needed some new fresh scifi in my system so I ent to the Swedish premiere and bam, I was in love and saw Firefly within a week which ended with me ordering the box.
Now after my fall to grace I remember that one of above said friends said to me a year ago "you should try to get your hands on a series called Firefly" but I didn't care much... oh stupid me |

"They cancelled Firefly, yet this is allowed to remain on the air?".
I bug the crap outta people because I still say that all the time. I looked forward to Firefly because of Joss, love Buffy a lot and Angel a little bit less. I didn't care about the order, just loved the 'verse I was thrown into. When Mal kicked the guy into the engine it shocked me, I knew it was too good. Too good to be true, too good to last. |

OK, I've always been a sucker for teevee science fiction. Way back when my four year old mind could only misunderstand the title of a certain series as "Star Truck", at least it kept me in a state of wonder. I'll give any SF series a shot, good or bad. Firefly was a show I loved and recomended to everyone I knew or met. Didn't do any good, but I can claim the title OGF with pride (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon_lol.gif)

I deliberately didn't watch it when it was on the air because I knew it would be cancelled and I knew I would love it. I call it the "Look What Happened to Wonderfalls" effect. I knew the azzhats wouldn't let it live. Maybe ratings would be better if people didn't have a reaction, based on past experience, that said, "Oh, good quality -- it'll be cancelled."
I mean, for Pete's sake -- they keep giving certain shows ::cough::Arrested Development::cough:: YEARS to find an audience, and all most of us wanted was a full season for good shows to find an audiance. But I'm not bitter. |

As HUGE Buffy fans my husband and I watched Firefly right from the get go...and we were hooked. We were so bummed when the series was cancelled. Then we saw a trailer for the movie, which rocked, and he found the old (closing) browncoat site back in July and I joined.
Looking forward to (and hoping for) the sequel. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon_biggrin.gif) |

A friend of a friend of mine named Sean had told me about Firefly a few months back. I recalled a sci-fi show of the same name having aired on TV, but I didn't watch it then because sci-fi generally ain't how I roll.
After hearing of a few of the more memorable moments (one of them in particular being the part where Mal shoots the Alliance agent in the pilot ep.), I figured, "Damn, I missed-out on something awesome." He told me that it had been taken off the air because FOX decided to show the episodes out of order, and ratings suffered. A few weeks later, he let my friend Nate borrow the DVD set of Firefly, then I borrowed it from Nate. I watched it all in one sitting (minus getting-up for DVD changes/bathroom breaks). The next day, I learned that Serenity was in post-production. November 26, I stumbled across the official Browncoats website. That same day, I became an official Browncoat. *thumbs up* |

I was already a big Whedon fan, so I was determined to watch and enjoy 'Firefly' (I managed to tape every aired episode even when that meant staying up until 1 am calling the local Fox affiliate: "will you run it AFTER the game???")
I bought more than a doze DVD sets of Firefly and made a lot of fans... all of whom went to see 'Serenity' and are buying that DVD on their own. As much as I miss Firefly/Serenity, I know I'll love Goners and Wonder Woman (and I'll be thrilled when we get more Serenity comics and the eventual BDS) |

Fell in love with Firefly thanks to the DVDs...a long-time fan of Joss Whedon, tried to watch it on Fox but became discouraged. Watched the DVD's straight through, though, and again and again. So now I can cry before the parts that get to me (not always sad parts, either, just the emotional moments when I totally lose it.) And then, of course, the movie...saw it, was hooked, saw it again. And again. and so on. Now I've got that DVD too, and can have marathon Firefly-Serenity sessions. Oddly enough, still have friends who like to join these! Just sayin. You asked! Original fox watcher, right here baby.
Who else wanted Fastlane to die a horrible horrible death? (it did die, thankfully) I still remember the sadness, and the shock of seeing Gina on Angel, and how I thought that'd be the only way I'd see the lovely Firefly cast again - through Buffy and Angel episodes. I still don't believe there is a movie- I must have imagined it. (my imagination must be much stronger then I thought) |

It was love at first site after that. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon_smile.gif) |

When I heard of the show Firefly and the sci-fi western concept, I knew I was going to love it. The previews were great and I convinced my wife to watch the first few episodes with me (she's not the biggest sci-fi fan). Well, I was hooked from the first show (I too loved the Firefly/John Doe Friday line-up). When I heard the show was canceled, I had the biggest hole in my stomach. Firefly was by far the best show that I had ever watched and it was the only show that I looked forward to seeing at the end of my long hard week. I carried the torch for the show all these years, even with my wife telling me "it was a good show, but it was cancelled. MOVE ON!". I just couldn't let it go. The DVDs came out and I watched them again and it just reaffirmed how wonderful and special a show it was. My wife watched them again and finally appreciated them as much as I did (ok, not as much, but she liked them a lot). (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon_smile.gif) The movie was icing on the cake. But like cake, when it is done, you just want more.
I think Mr. Whedon (calling him Joss just doesn't seem right) is going to need some time to work on other things that are on his plate (Goners and W.W.) but will eventually come back to the 'verse. There is just to much that hasn't been explored. We just have to be patient, supportive, and keep the dream alive. Sorry so long, this is my first post and I'm making up for lost time. It was back in highschool and they showed it on FOX on Friday nights. I couldnt catch it because I was in the marching band but I remember one friday night it was raining so they cancelled the game. Bam, free friday night and me and a couple of buddies didnt know what to do so like the Americans we are we decided to just watch TV and maybe burn one, anyway Firefly came on and I believe it was "The Train Job" so we watched it and from there I got hooked. Pretty pissed when it got canceled so when it was available on DVD I picked it up.

Loved it from the start.
I agree with the "this crap is still on but they cancelled firefly?" sentiment, though there are plenty of great shows on that I fully support, Numb3rs and House being some of them, though they're not scifi. There are a lot of underdogs out there, shows that aren't getting the attention and love they deserve -- Arrested Development is one. Hopefully it'll be saved from cancelled tv wasteland and be put back on the air. I cant believe it's been so long since it was cancelled -- seems like yesterday. I wouldn't know, FOX pre-empted the cancellation. |

I watched from the beginning, got the boxed set as soon as it came out & am a proud owner of a shiny new Serenity DVD (fullscreen & unrated version). My sister-in-law has crocheted Jayne's Cunning Cap, though, so I think she wins in the family contest of Who's A Bigger Firefly fan... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon_lol.gif)
Of course, as an Adam fan from waaaaaay back, a Nathan fan from even further back & a huge Joss fan, there was no way I wasn't going to watch this show! |

I am a big sci-fan fan and when I started to see ads for the show befor it aired, I thought it looked interesting, so I kept checking for an actuall airdate.
When they showed "The train Job" I found it a bit confusing because I had no idea how the people related to each other but I had already read on other boards that Fox had decided not to show the first episode. Idjits:D That is not to say I didn't enjoy the "Train Job" I did very much. Firefly was the first show that I enjoyed right from the beginning since B5. Had no idea who Joss was then, but I sure know now.(IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon_biggrin.gif) |

I remember seeing the original tv commercials for it, namely the commercial with Wash yelling "Who's flying this thing! Oh right, that would be me." And I remember thinking "That looks like a good show, I'll have to check it out." Unfortunately, I never got to for some reason and I forgot about it for a while.
Flash forward a coupla years. Online I come across the name Browncoats in a forum. I find out that it's the Firefly fanbase and I remembered my initial interest, so I looked up some more info--turns out there was rumor of a movie. I thought "I'll see it when it comes out." So, one afternoon in October, I saw that it was playing at the little theater in Taylor, TX for one day only. Me and a buddy walked in and the guy behind the counter (the only guy there) said "I'm really picky about my sci-fi, but I watched it last night and it blew me away." We got psyched being sci-fi fans ourselves. Then it started and by the time it ended my jaw was on the floor. I was hooked. I went out and got the Firefly DVD's, the soundtracks to both the film and the series, and now I own Serenity. I am a Browncoat 'til the end...a new recruit, yes, but a Browncoat nonetheless. So that's my "How I became a Browncoat" story. |
