Dark Horse’s Dirk Wood has confirmed yesterday that Joss Whedon will be working on new Serenity comics, bringing us new adventures in the 'verse, which are canon (ie fact). He says they will be "set within the continuity of Firefly".

Can't say I'm thrilled the story is continuing in this format, but I'll be obliged to check it out.

You find any takers on that ask them if they wanna bet with me as well, ok?
cbankla
maybe dead or alive?
so these would be firefly and not serenity comics, cool!
but weird but also cool i i mean shiny

Shiny news indeed ! I loved the original three issue run of Serenity ( so much so that I picked up all nine covers and two copies of the TPB). Im sure these will keep up the same high standard. I dont care if it's TV, movies, novels, cartoons or comics...any medium that allows me to hang out in the 'verse works for me *!!!

* ( Of course I'd PREFER TV and movies !) icon_wink.gif
Guardian_Owl
I hope that:
A.)Each issue is longer and the story arc is covered over a longer period of time
B.)The quality improves, the original 3 comic series was average at best, my main beef with it was the return of THAT Firefly villan at the end of Issue 1, beyond impossible.
jetflair
Wow......it's always good news to hear about this story continuing, in any form. The comics just didn't have the Firefly magic to me, but I will of course still buy these.

I wouldn't know who to suggest this to officially, but there is an absolutely FANTASTIC artist who has been posting on fireflyfans.net who draws our BDHs better than anyone I have ever seen...better than the comics, better than Jason Palmer. His username is mphillips. If there is any way to get him involved with this project, I think his art could help make this series more beloved by the fans. He does our beloved crew justice.
EireAngel
That is great news. Anyway to keep the stories coming. Fantastic.

I am really excited about this,
I loved the first three comics and I'm really hoping for a lot more...

of course I'd rather have more TV or another movie,
but comics are sweet...I have faith in Joss coming up with a lot of entertainment

I can't wait!

Just had to continue my train of thought here. The Serenity comics were good; well written, well drawn, entertaining story. Favorite comics I've ever read, and the only ones I've ever purchased.

What made them lack the appeal of Firefly and Serenity to me was the last of the actors and actresses who made the characters the people we love. The comics just didn't capture that, and it's probably impossible. But mphillips does such a good job of brining them to life that I'm guessing a comic drawn by him would be about the closest possible thing to seeing them on screen.
FireflyFlanatic
Well, I'm thrilled and happy that we'll be getting some more of the 'verse but I wish it was something on tv or at the movies again and I'd even prefer a novel over comics. I thought the comics were okay, but I'm just not a comics sort of gal. But, it's better than nothing so this is shiny news indeed!

This is awesome!!!!!!!!!!

I agree but I'll have to check it out to support the cause
Elentari
Yeah, it's not quite the same to me, not without Nathan, Jewel, Summer, and the rest of the cast breathing life into these very real characters.
Mobius
I will seriously take what I can get. My skin crawls just thinking that there won't be anything new, so the comics may just feed that need.
mifeng57
Oh! Shiny! Just got back from Wondercon, and came home to this news!
Thanks for the news Gossi!
murdock
w00t, thanks gossi! Keep us posted... judging by last time, I'm gonna have to secure mine in advance. Stupid local bookstores never order enough!
Novus
awesome!! I really want to get my hands on the first comics too though
Jubal Early
Man, I can't wait for more comics!

Greatest. News. EVER. Well... I mean, it could include announcing Firefly the series II... but you know. icon_smile.gif

Only thing I ask is that they colour Mal's eyes blue and not brown this time!

This sure does look shiny...though, hope its a better standard than the last ones...I was a bit dissapointed with them.

Maybe we find more about Book and Blue Sun...and...salivates...Mal/Inara maybe...

But yeah, can't wait till it comes out...

Ok, hang on a second. Not that this isn't great news and all, but "Set in the Firefly continuity." I'm trying to figure out exactly what this means. As I read it, it could mean:

1.) Set prior to the events of Serenity and possibly prior to the 3-issue release.

2.) Set post-Serenity and it was just a flub in the phrasing of the announcement.

3.) We now have a split in our continuity. Serenity is one telling of the story, the comics will be another, and the two won't match up necessarily. This seems the least likely, since it's stating the comics will be canon and you can't get rid of Serenity (also canon) and have them conflict.

My GUESS is #1 is the case, in which case I'm kind of disappointed. I want to see what happens AFTER Serenity. While I'm happy to get more backstory, character development, etc., to me the continuing story of the crew post-Serenity is more interesting. That said, once I get more info, I'll probably sign up for a subscription.

I think that we can pretty much guarantee that future comics will probably be set in a pre-Serenity 'verse, since Joss has very specific post-Serenity story arcs that he's saving for possible feature film sequels (as unlikely as those sequels may be.)

Regardless (and I've posted about this before), I hope that they decide to go beyond the boundaries of another comic miniseries and decide to start publishing a regular Firefly comic series. God knows the 'verse is big enough to sustain one.
Solo4114
True, there's certainly enough information left to play with, but a backward looking story makes me worry about unintended continuity problems. I know Joss is usually rock-solid reliable on those issues, but "going back in time" (even if it's only in terms of telling a backstory) can be a tricky thing. If you figure that it's set DURING the Firefly continuity, and given that the Firefly stories all pretty well dovetail together (and Firefly dovetailed with the Serenity comics, which dovetailed with the film...), that leaves you with a somewhat limited range of time in which to set your stories.

I just wonder how much more can be done in that setting without somehow treading on the toes of existing stories, either in the sense of "Wait, how did THAT happen right there when next episode they were at THAT place?" or "Now hang on, you mean NO ONE mentioned this stuff during the episode that came immediately after this??"

When you start telling stories WITHIN your framework (or before your framework) you have to be REALLY careful with issues like this. I trust Joss to do it, and to not go and Lucas things up, but it'll be tricky.

Yeah, there's only so much ground that can be covered during the 12-18 months between the events of the Firefly pilot and the "Serenity" feature film, so if the series were ever picked up as a monthly title, I would expect a lot of character flashbacks.

Hell, there's an entire potential series to be had depicting Mal & Zoe's involvement in the War of Independence, to say nothing of pre-Firefly stories to be told regarding the rest of the crew.
libbyhorse
yea!! when will we be getting a firefly model to by??
Hmmmm
Sorry for being late to the party....

Can anyone direct me to where I can purchase the 3 pre-Serenity comics? I bought the Serenity Photo Companion book and they are mentioned in the back... but I wasn't sure if they had been released yet.

I've only been in the 'verse for about 3 weeks, so I'm trying to catch up. Thanks, Hmmmm
Solo4114
For the existing comics, if you want them in their single issue release form, I'd look on ebay or your local comics shop (if they still have any left). Ebay might be a better bet, though.

If you just want the story and aren't interested in the collecting aspect, you can buy the full collection on amazon. Just do a search for something like "Serenity comic" or somesuch and that should pull it up. It's fairly short, but entertaining nonetheless.

Personally, I'd LOVE to see stories about the war and would be fine only reading about Mal and Zoe, or just getting a whole series of "What came before". I think you could do that without treading on the toes of the existing storyline.

Looking forward to the new comics. Of course I am looking forward to anything coming out about the 'verse. icon_wink.gif

I just checked TFAW.COM (where I got my Serenity comics), and they still have some issues 1 & 2, but not 3 (so yeah, ebay). Or just go to Dark Horse or Amazon and get the 3-in-1 trade paperback "Serenity: Those Left Behind" which is the same thing, unless you have to have all nine comic covers for your collection.

As for the new set o' comics, I'm ok w/ whatever timeline Joss wants to tell. Using Firefly is kinda spitting on Fox, which I don't much mind. It could be worse; does anyone remember his promise on whedonesque that new 'verse stories would be told - even if he had to put them in a gorram blog? Much as I love reading anything he writes, yeah, it could be worse. Also his interview where he affirmed that he knows Jubal Early lived, so that's a sucker bet. Jetflair, where on FFF does yr shiny artist display?

Read this at school, very hard not to get up and dance around. More comics!? Shiny like the sun! It might not be a movie or TV but the profit and exposure into yet another medium of story telling will still help the cause! I know I can recurit more people when more come out.
Keep us updated and thanks for the news, it made my day icon_biggrin.gif

You could just get the trade paper back of the 3 comics at amazon, called Serenity: Those Left Behind, I think.

Just had to pipe in about continuity here.

Continuity is not a nessesity in all honesty because if you look at dozens of Anime series they commonly have two or three "Alternate universes"

Take Tenchi Muyo for one..

You have the TV series which is one universe.

Then you have the OAVs which is the same characters but in a differant continuity altogether

There's even the Tenchi Movies adn the Pretty Sammy series. There's even comics/graphic novels all of which are totally differant coninuities.

Tenchi Muyo fans love all of em but usually have one favorite continuity. Differant continuities just give many differant kinds of fans more to love.

Some "Serenifly" fans would prefer post-Serenity episodes/comics/movies, etc whereas some would prefer pre-Serenity.

Point is Joss could have both if he really wanted to.. hell he could rewrite firefly/serenity any ol way he wanted based on the flexability of alternate universes.. Whatever Joss chooses to do with the series is fine by me and I'll snag anythign I can get.

Have you looked at any of the Firefly fan fiction? There are hundreds of stories already written and (slash, shipper, and alternate universe stories aside) many of them do an excellent job of staying within continuity, telling a great tale, and not affecting future events. My only concern is that Joss remain on top of the overall arc and the direction of the comics, but I don't see him giving that up to anybody, so no worries...
