Hi there to anybody who is trying to join our little forum.
I'm not sure how easy it is right now, though I know it was difficult at one time. However, we inhabitants would really like for you to join and can help you out if we know what your usernames are. If you know someone on the board, please email them and tell them your username so we can get it taken care of. Otherwise, we'll have to come up with something. Hope to see you posting soon! |

Hey new folks, I think I have an idea about how to make this work.
Check back later today for a post with instruction on how to get around our validation problem. |

I still don't have approval for my plan, so keep an eye on this space if you're trying to join and having trouble.

Who is the admin now anyway? And why would there be a validation problem? Is this some sort of elitist Alliance conspiracy to keep the Browncoats to a manageable number?
And while I'm at it, why can't I post something in the "Across the Cortex" forum? I wanted to point out that Lisa Lassek was the film (or video) editor for the pilot episode of Alphas, something that neither Whedonesque or The Signal had posted about, but I got an error message saying I wasn't allowed to play there. |

It's all a plan to keep us from getting overrun by spambots. |

As Hero mentioned, Spambots. As to the cortex, I could be wrong, but I think that's feeds from other related sites, not stuff we actually get to post in. |

My friend Dunc still can't get in. Not sure the exact screen name he registered but it should start with DUNC, might end with an or TK and some numbers. Anyway any help getting him approved would be greatly appreciated. He has tried registering twice, once was here briefly as his name was on the bottom but was unable to post anything. Now he is just gone and can't get back in.

The way registering USED to work is that an automatic email would go out, like with other internet services, and you could be up and running nice and quick.
Because we're under constant spambot attack, that function has been disabled. (Seriously, go look at the Members and sort by "join date" in descending order and see what I mean.) I assume spambots can get around that now. I checked, and there is no user starting with DUN or even containing DUN that is waiting for validation. I'm more than happy to contact admin and tell him what Duncan's username is, once I have some clue, but I searched back through the last several days of registered users and I didn't see a darned thing that looked like it might be Duncan. |

Also, it would appear that admin periodically cleans up the spambot users, so any users that folks created but didn't get approved, might be gone and have to be re-created.

what is the deal and the use of these spambots, because you are right, every time i log in there is some weird named user or visitor that must be a spambot, but they are definately loads of them all the time....why?
is it like that everywhere and its just that we can see it all the time and so we know? or do they jsut really love us? xxx |

My guess, and this is totally a guess, is that they're looking for ways to get email addresses. If they could get logged in, they could get email addresses for anybody who put theirs in their profile.
but I might be wrong about that. |

It's like that everywhere, Pol. It's sad that admin had to resort to manually adding people, but there's no real way around it.
Spambots will spam the board with ads. They make so many posts in such a short time that they can destroy a board by pushing off all the legitimate posts. |
