An abbey, as you might know, is a Christian monastery: a place for prayer, and for respectful discussion and reflection on the substance of religion. That's what we do here. We share our burdens and pray for each other, and we discuss and reflect on what our faith means in our lives. I reckon my name on the paperwork to start this place up makes me Abbot Gwyn to some, but really I'm just a seeker, just Gwyn, and the idea came from HoC and squidnurse anyhow making them like-minded seekers as well. This is a liberal and tolerant house. If you don't understand why - if that word "liberal" sets your hair on edge, or if the concept of being "tolerant" leads you either to pride or to righteous indignation - you're welcome to take quiet enjoyment here but you might not be happy. There are, according to ReligiousTolerance.org, as many as 34,000 separate Christian sects in the 'verse. A curious soul could learn about one each day and not know them all in a lifetime. I am ashamed to cogitate that fully half of those consider any but their own believers to be infidels. If that's how you feel, leave it at the door. It's never our theology or understanding of how God works that saves us; it's God and God alone. But the human journey towards truth always begins with some question, and if the truth will set us free, we ought not to be afraid to pursue it. So here is a place where we can thoughtfully ask and try to answer those questions we have about how God does and doesn't work, doing so with as much compassion and care for one another as we'd hope for ourselves. Our purpose is not to evangelize or try and convert anyone; rather we hope to discuss the nature of God and faith in our personal lives and in the world. An important part of this team will be prayer. Anyone with a prayer request can PM any member of the team and that request will be added to the prayer chain. Also, this team will be a place to pray in writing. Writing down our prayers won't make God hear them any better: God always hears us loud and clear! Writing down our prayers and reading others' prayers will, hopefully, help us to look into our hearts to better understand what we want, what we need, how we hurt, how much we have in common with our fellow man; help us, through that better understanding, to deepen and strengthen our own connections to God.
