With September 30th (The 1st Anniversary of the BDM) coming up rapidly, I think it's high time we did something about it. It's a bit late to organize Theater showings nationwide, 'though We should applaud those who are attempting to do so. Given that we're still just scattered individuals, I'd like to propose two small projects that can garner BIG results:

The Anniversary Job

September 30th will mark the first Anniversary of the American Release of "Serenity". To commemorate this event, we'd like folks to do the following:

A few days prior to that date, send a letter to Universal Studios in Hollywood. In your own words, Congratulate them, Thank them for making the film and include any other comments you'd like to make. Contact info is below.

On the 30th, please do two things; Send Universal an e-mail of thanks (like the letter), and Celebrate the Anniversary by watching the Series or the movie with someone who hasn't seen it before! This can be anything from a small get-together in your Living Room to booking a Venue and showing the film for Charity. Just let others know about the Serenifly 'verse.

Thank you.

-Thank you all very much for your help!

A very good idea.

I have the link saved to send Universal an email, regarding shindigs etc. I'm gonna be working that weekend in Milton Keynes, at an event where we have a Serenity cast member - Adam Baldwin, so will hopefully have a bit of celebration then.

Any browncoats thinking of going, we could try and organise a meet up and celebrate in style!

Yeah same here, a few of us are gonna have a Firefly/Serenity night the following weekend, that will be fun, about 10 of us in a house, watching the DVDs, popcorn and beer (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon_mrgreen.gif)

What's everyon else got planned?

Well, for me, the 7th is the provisonal date for the next Leeds shindig, so there should be a good number of us then. We always meet in the Firefly bar in the center of Leeds, they know us in there now! Last time we got the barman wearing a Jayne hat, and yesterday when Toni arrived a different barman said he wasn't sure we'd be allowed to sit downstairs as it's not open til 8 usually (this was at 1pm) and he'd have to ask his manager. Toni said "Okay, tell him its the people in the orange and yellow hats.." and the barman went away, came back, said "Yes, he says that's fine and do you want the furniture rearranging?" I like this... a lot of good ol' Grass Roots Activity (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon_smile.gif).
I posted my suggestions because I thought they'd give us a Focus and produce results. If we rattle Universal's cage on that date, and get newbies to watch the BDM, it will manage to produce results (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon_smile.gif) TD/Tim

Cleveland is organizing a showing Oct 1 at the Case Film Society running from noon to midnight. We will start with Serenity, Safe, Jaynestown, Out of Gas, Ariel, Heart of Gold. An hour for dinner then 7pm welcome, Joss's EN speech, Serenity, costume contest, raffle. Profits will be split between Equality Now and the Cleveland Domestic Violence Shelter. We don't have a site up yet for it but I will post a link as soon as we do.

Great news, Cleveland (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon_smile.gif). Sounds like a good effort. My point, I just want to make clear, is that if your local BCs Don't have an activity planned, the e-mails and private showings are something You, as an individual, can do to make an impact on September 30th. I've always been uncomfortable with us browncoats saying that we've "done the impossible". I prefer to think that we're still doing the impossible! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon_cool.gif)

If any of you are members of other boards, please, by all means, get the word out about the Sept 30th campaign. Thanx! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon_biggrin.gif) TD/Tim

Been posting like crazy. I've covered most of the California boards. Has anyone hit Fireflyfans.net and the OB? What about Whedonesque?

I'm up for writing letters & emails. And have people over and force myself to watch the BDM again? Gee, I think I could make that sacrifice. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon_wink.gif)

QUOTE(bugmom651 @ Aug 10 2006, 12:01 PM)

I've covered most of the California boards. Has anyone hit Fireflyfans.net and the OB? What about Whedonesque?
I hit FFF, I don't know how to request them to make it a "news" item to make it show up on the front page though. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon_confused.gif)

Someone at FireflyFans.net said that during a letter writing campaign to SciFi, they all used Brown paper, that way the suits would know what it was about even if they didn't read them all! I think that's a smashing idea! It also made me think (scary!), maybe, for people who can't find brown paper or don't want to buy a ream of brown paper for one thing, they could draw or print out a Serenity-related pic on the page somewhere, & then handwrite or type on the paper still. (Handwritten is better, but anything is better than nothing!!)

We figure it'd be best for people to each do their own graphic thingy (IF they choose to do one) to help keep it from looking spam-y or "I didn't really put any thought into this form letter"-y. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon_wink.gif) Could do watermarks big on the page, something at the top, bottom, back, or whatever! YAY!

That's Great news (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon_smile.gif)...

Thank you, one and all. Let's keep in mind that the Anniversary is over 45 days away at this point. We'll need to send out a reminder to everyone, I would say sometime around the 25th or so. I really am amazed how quickly this idea has been embraced, and I thank each and every one of you for your enthusiasm (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon_biggrin.gif)! TD/Tim

Emails are great, but letters are better! Every hand written (or typed!) letter represents a dozen emails. Post cards are great too!

Here are a couple of addresses to send snail mail to Universal:

Production Offices:

UP Productions
Universal Studios
100 Universal City Plaza, Bldg. 4111/102
Universal City, CA 91608

Marketing Department:

New Media Marketing Division
Universal Studios
100 Universal City Plaza, Bldg. 2160/8
Universal City, CA 91608

So get out that pen and paper and start writing!

I went to Hobby Lobby today and bought some 9x12 manila (that's light brown to you & me (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon_wink.gif) )paper to use as "stationary" for my letter. I'm gonna put a Serenity and/or Firefly icon on it, and will make the letter "Attn: PR Department" in hopes that they'll catch onto the potential publicity these letters can give them (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon_smile.gif). I intend to mail this little tome on September 27th, so that it stands a good chance of arriving on the 30th exactly (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon_smile.gif).

This and an e-mail are what I'm going to do.
Also going to try to have a get-together with BCs and Newbies, either at a Chinese Buffet's banquet room, or at my house if that falls through. Everyone should try to do this their own way, in their own style. If you feel like enclosing pictures of your dog in a Jayne hat, by all means do so (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon_wink.gif). Just do what you can to let Universal know that we appreciate what they've done, and that we'd like to see More! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon_biggrin.gif) TD/Tim

I'm gonna work on writing my letters this wk, that way they'll be all ready just to drop in the mail at the end of next month. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon_smile.gif)

(I'll also be emailing & probably having a small shindig w/friends, Browncoats & not-yet-Browncoats. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon_wink.gif)

Regarding letters to Universal.

Letters being sent to the Production Offices should be sent to Mary Parent. She was the one responsible for giving Serenity the green light.

I'm in!! Have Serenity in HD but no player yet ( EXPENSIVE!!) and gosh this is the perfect excuse to buy it! I have met several fans in the last couple months from my Serenity wallpaper, and I think it's time to get them all together. I think I'll have each fan bring a civilian and we'll spread the word that way. THANKS fo the idea!!

You're welcome, csnow. Don't forget to send the e-mail and/or letter, and ask your friends to do it too. At the get-together I'm planning, we're going to have slips of paper with Universal's e-mail address on it (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon_smile.gif)! The goal is to draw attention to the BDM on it's Birthday. Looks like a lot of folks are wanting to help.

Thank you, one and all! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon_smile.gif) TD/Tim

I have to agree that letters will get more attention at the studio. Emails are too easily deleted. Everyone can show their creativity by designing a Serenity letterhead and getting to point of the letter fast and sweet.

Bugmom651 had a good point; Snail Mail might be best sent as "Attn: Mary Parent". Fill her desk with letters and we just might get Universal's attention! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon_biggrin.gif) To get them there on or Very close to Sept 30th, it might be best to send snail mail 3-4 days early (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon_smile.gif) TD/Tim

Note: This post is out of date. We now have a correct address and it's posted in the beginning of this thread! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon_smile.gif)
